Summary of Prose Fiction

1. Historically spesific phenomenon of literature 

- In ancient Greece and Rome, most literature was in verse.

- In Elizabethan England, most people prefered to be sonneteer than a prose fiction author.

1. Prose fiction consist of many sub-genres. 

The main categories of prose fiction that defined quite simply by length are :

- Novel, It is a fictional narative that is long enough to be published as a book by itself. (e.g. Pride and Prejudice)

- Short story, It is a fictional narrative with a few pages. The page is not long and less than novel's page. (e.g. Some of the late writings of Samuel Beckett, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature)

2. Narrative

- Narrative is a sequence of events, fictional or non-fictional, told or narrated by someone to someone else.

- Narrator is the person whethet known or unknown, named or anonymous who narrates the narrative.

- Audience or reader (Narratee) is the person to whom the narrative seems to be directed.

- Narratology is the whole bussiness of how narrators narrates narratives to narratees.

3. Novella is one of prose categories between short story and novel that can fill a whole book but do not seem quite big enough. (e.g. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde)

4. Categorisation text as novel or novella or short story 

A term of tesxt whether it is novel or novella or short story, is only as good as the thoughts and reading that it generates. It is a tool  for opening and working on real texts.

- Thinking of text as short story might lead to an emphasis on the relatively simple central point of the narrative.

- Thinking of text as novel might turn the reader's attention to its complex narrative structure, the relatively large number of significant characters, and the extent to which it depicts an elaborate urban setting, even a fictional world.

5. The categories that we use do not come from infallible authority. The sign is :
