1.      Historically specific phenomenon of literature
a.
In ancient Greece and Rome, most literature was in verse.
b.
In Elizabethan England, it was much smarter to be a sonneter than a prose fiction author.

2.       Prose fiction genres
Prose fiction consists of many sub-genres. Some of these are usually defined quite simply by length The main categories are novel and short story. Novel is a fictional narrative that is long enough to be published as a book by itself. If it's a single prose fiction narrative and long enough to have been published originally as a book then it's novel.

3.    A narrative is a sequence of events, fictional or non-fictional, told or narrated by someone (narrator) to someone else (audience or the reader or narratee). The whole business  of how narrators narrate narratives to narratees is called narratology.

4.      The definition of novellas
Novellas or we might choose to call these long short novels or long short stories, are texts that can fill a whole book but do not seem quite big enough.
Example : The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

5.       The difference between thinking the texts as short story and novel :
a. The thinking of short story leads to an emphasis on the relatively simple central point if the narrative.
b. The thinking of novel turns the reader's attention to its complex narrative structure, the relatively large number of significant characters, and the extent if which it depicts an elaborate urban setting, even a fictional 'world'

6.      If we put the terminology for fictional narratives in an international context, other question arise. What we call a 'novel' in English is, in some other languages, including French, German and Danish, a roman (pronounced in various ways). This is another sign that categories that we use do not come from any infallible authority.
